What is energy hygiene? Why it’s just as important as personal hygiene.
Welcome to my first ever blog post! I wanted to start this blog as a space for all of my energy rants to land and serve as a reference point for quick insights so that you all have a grander understanding on all things energetics. By no means at all am I a professional within this scope. However, I have ample lived experience that’s encouraged me to deep dive into the realm of energy. As a highly sensitive & empathic individual it became clear that it was essential that had to learn how to care for myself energetically if I were to operate within a fast paced world that praises burnout and overwhelm.
So let’s get right into it. We tend to think of hygiene as purely physical — showering, brushing your teeth, going to bed at a decent time. But the truth is we’re not just physical beings, we’re energetic beings. Every day whether we are consciously aware of it or not our energetic field is interacting with the surrounding energetic fields of other people, places & even things, think crystals & plants!
We move through the world with a subtle energetic field around us at all times. This field interweaves with our physical body. The field is intelligent, dynamic and very much alive by continuously shifting at all moments. Energy fields are permeable, meaning they not only send energy outward through our thoughts, emotions and presence. We also receive energy from the outside world by absorbing energy in the form of emotional residue, tension, the charge or energy of an environment, relationships and especially the heaviness of global events whether you’re aware of them or not. We are all feeling the energetics of everything going on in the world. We are all connected.
Similar to how our skin & hair can get dirty by accumulating oil, dirt & sweat over the course of our day, our energetic field can accumulate debris in the form of stagnant emotional energy. Really this is just energy that we may have absorbed from our environment and experiences in life and it can get stuck within our field.
Our energetic field is also known as the “aura” — the subtle energy that surrounds and extends past your physical body. It’s made up of multiple layers which can also be called subtle bodies. We have 4 layers that we work with within Integrated Energy Therapy, there’s the physical energetic body, the emotional energetic body, the mental energetic body & the spiritual energetic body. Each of these layers can hold onto different energetic imprints of blockages within your field. We can dive deeper into some examples in another blog post!
When we absorb an excess amount of energy from our surroundings we can start to feel some symptoms. In turn affecting our clarity, mood, ability to move forward in life with ease. Within my unique experience, I know that I am overloaded when I start to experience agitation and a surge of emotions with no obvious source of leaving me feel wildly fatigued and downright confused.
Take a moment to breathe, reflect here. What are some of the ways that your body tries to communicate with you that you’re overloaded with outside energy? Are you feeling overrun and exhausted but have not done much to leave you feeling that way? Are you emotional for reasons you can’t define? Maybe you’re having intrusive thoughts or feelings of anxiety. This is very unique for everyone.
Again, we all experience this overload in different ways. This is where energetic hygiene comes in. There are endless ways to clear your energy field. If you go to google and ask about energy clearing or energy protection, you will find endless techniques, it can be overwhelming to choose. One of my favorite spiritual teachers suggests practicing what is simple, safe & sacred to you.
For me my go to is simple, grounding in nature. Take off the shoes and get those feet directly onto the earth. When we ground we allow the negative ionic charge of the earth to interact with our energetic field and serve as a energetic sponge drawing out excess or stagnant energy, which is released through the soles of our feet and given back to the earth. Think about this interaction as completing a circuit, you had excess energy so grounding connects your energy to earth’s energy, which is vast, neutral and balancing.
From an Integrated Energy Therapy perspective we work with what’s known as cellular memory areas in the body. These are specific points or areas on the body that store unresolved emotional and energetic imprints. These can include feelings like guilt, shame, fear, grief and so many more. These blockages can exist anywhere within the four layers of your energetic field. When these areas become congested, you can feel heavy, foggy or misaligned. IET offers a gentle structured way to release stagnant energy from these memory centers and then intentionally integrate or infuse new energy to take that place. One example to better paint this picture, we release the energy of heartache and betrayal from the heart center and we integrate the energy of unconditional love back in it’s place.
I see emotions defined as energy - in - motion. Your homework for making it to the end of this blog is to notice next time you begin to feel the sensation of an emotion bubbling up within you. When this inevitably happens, are you safe to feel and express this? If you can now see this emotion as simply energy that’s coming up urging you to allow it to be released, can you honor that? It’s intense to feel. I know and get it. But remember, emotions typically last around 90 seconds & it’s better to get it up an out than let it fester and get stuck within your field.
All my love,
Felicia
